As the use of battery-powered electronic devices increase, so too does the risk to our environment. Improper disposal of batteries introduces pollutants such as mercury, silver, lead, chromium, and cadmium into our ecosystem.
Lighting Resources accepts batteries of any shape, size or chemical composition for recycling. Some of the types of batteries we accept for disposal include (but are not limited to)...
Your batteries should be sorted by chemistry and packaged in a sealed container such as a 5 gallon pail or a lined 55 gallon drum. Non-HMR exempt batteries must be packaged in a manner that prevents short circuiting and damage to the battery or its terminals. This can be achieved by isolating battery terminals with tape or packaging individual batteries in fully enclosed inner packagings made of non-conductive materials.
Large non-leaking batteries should be palletized in preparation for transport. Batteries should be placed securely on a wooden pallet capable of supporting the weight of the total load. Electrical tape should be used to isolate the contacts of each battery. Use a non-conductive material to secure the load to the pallet - such as poly banding or shrink wrap. Batteries may be double stacked on the pallet but the overall height of the pallet must not exceed two times the height of the battery.
Leaking or damaged batteries should be packaged separately from non-leaking batteries and clearly labeled as "Leaking Batteries". All free liquid must be separated from the battery casing and shipped separately. Remember to exercise caution when handling damaged or leaking batteries.
Your batteries should be appropriately labeled to meet USDOT regulations. Universal waste batteries must be clearly labeled as "Universal Waste Batteries". Batteries regulated under HMR should be labeled as "Hazardous Waste" with the appropriate class 8 or 9 labels affixed to the shipping container.
Please note: Additional handing and labor charges will be assessed for batteries that are not properly packaged, isolated, labeled or sorted. Due to safety and liability concerns, our carriers may refuse materials that are not packaged to meet USDOT regulations.
