Mercury is frequently used in thermometers, thermostats, electrical and electronic devices, components, and applications. A highly toxic material, mercury must be properly disposed of when removed from use.
Mercury is generally managed as a universal waste when contained in a intact mercury device such as a thermometer or thermostat. In other situations mercury is managed as a hazardous waste and must only be treated or processed in regulated trucks or facilities. Lighting Resources trucks and facilities are permitted to handle mercury as a hazardous waste. This also allows Lighting Resources trucks and facilities to manage phosphorous powder and lamps that are intentionally crushed. (Most states consider intentionally crushed lamps to be hazardous waste, whereas lamps that break as a part of the transportation process are considered universal waste.)
Lighting Resources operates state-of-the-art retort ovens to remove mercury from phosphorous powder. Additionally we are one of the only recyclers to operate triple distillation equipment to return mercury to virgin specifications making it more likely to be reused. Whenever possible Lighting Resources extracts mercury from reusable materials and distills it reuse in a variety of applications. Non-reusable materials are thermally destroyed.
Lighting Resources can accept many mercury-containing devices for processing. Some of the types of mercury waste we can accept for recycling include (but are not limited to) the following types. For specific questions, please email Lighting Resources.
